Race with what you trained! (Post 2 of 2)

Disclaimer: I received a kit of Gatorade Endurance Fuel and Hydration products to review as part of being a BibRave Pro. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (Ambassador), and check out BibRave.com to find and write race reviews.

During my testing cycle of the Gatorade Endurance fuel and hydration kit, the products I ended up using and liking the most were the Carb Energy Chews; the Fruit Punch flavor in particular.

Like most people out there, including us runners, I feel that the consistency of any food I am trying to eat is key to not only being able to have an appetite for it, but ultimately enjoying it and wanting to have it again next time. I alluded to this on my first post last week regarding these products and on the importance of identifying a fuel source you can not only enjoy but also find agreeable for your body and metabolism.

I have tried a lot of chewable energy blocks over the years and while there have been some I've enjoyed over others, I would say that these Gatorade Endurance chews are now at the top of my list. Both their Fruit Punch and Orange flavors are good, but for whatever reason between those two I ended up liking the Fruit Punch more. It generally works the other way around for me---I generally prefer citrus flavors like lemon, lime, and orange. But putting taste aside, there was something about the consistency of these chews that really won me over. It has a great balance and blend between softness and hardness, not too tilted in either direction, and I found them to be super easy to chew, savor, and ingest quickly.

I find that many of the sport chewing blocks on the market are a bit much on the hard side, which makes them too gummy and chewy, where a lot of each piece sticks to your teeth to the point where you almost have to pick at them with your fingers, something I don't think anyone enjoys doing. The Gatorade Endurance Carb Energy Chews are the opposite of that. I found that all it takes is one or two, max three easy bites and they go down nice and easy, letting out just the right amount of juicy flavor and leaving you ready to take on the next one on the pack right away. On my training runs as well as during the Chicago Marathon, where these chews were provided along the course by the race, I was able to easily consume one pack within just a minute or two after grabbing them.

In addition, the carbs and electrolyte blend on these chews contains 31 grams of carbohydrates per pack along with 110 of sodium and 55mg of potassium, all of which is formulated to help you stay in the fight and go further when your body needs it most. They definitely helped me do just do that in Chicago a couple of weeks ago as I was able to keep pushing even on those tough last six miles of the marathon.

I feel that their price is reasonable, as they currently retail for $34.99 at the Gatorade Endurance website for a case of 21 packs ($1.66/pack) as a one-time purchase, and for $31.49 if you opt for the convenience of their subscription service.

If you are looking for or considering using chewables for your fuel source during your endurance runs and haven't tried these, I'd definitely suggest giving them a shot, I don't think you'll regret doing so.
