Running to remember Tony Banovich

Disclaimer: I received a free entry to the Virtual Tony Banovich Roads, Tracks, and Trails Memorial Run as part of being a BibRave Ambassador. Learn more about becoming a BibRave Ambassador and check out BibRave.com to review, find, and write race reviews!

Last month I was saddened to learn about the passing of a friend I greatly admired, Tony Banovich. Tony served as Race Director of the Missoula Marathon and Executive Director of the nonprofit organization Run Wild Missoula, but was most importantly, an amazing human being of unequaled kindness and generosity who will be dearly missed by many of us.

From the moment I met Tony at the start of the BibRave campaign for the 2018 Missoula Marathon, he treated me like family. He communicated often with me and went out of his way to do things that made me feel completely welcome and appreciated as an important member of his team.

As a way to remember Tony's legacy and help support Run Wild Missoula, a number of running industry organizations led by BibRave, Events Southwest, and the Louisville Running Company, came together and created the Tony Banovich Roads, Tracks, and Trails Memorial Run. This charity event will be presented by AfterShokz and have all of its proceeds benefit Run Wild Missoula.

The event challenges participants to run or walk 4.35 miles – the average daily distance of Banovich’s 1,731 day run streak – while raising funds for Run Wild Missoula, an organization that held a special place in Tony's heart.

Registration is open now and will be until December 11th. We then have until December 31st to choose any day we'd like to run or walk 4.35 miles. Why that specific distance? Because that was the average daily distance of Tony's amazing run streak of 1,731 days! Talk about complete love and dedication to this sport. The longest run streak I've ever had was of 30 days about a year and a half ago, and as much as I love running, I can't imagine going much further beyond that mark. So to have done so for 1,731 days straight, it is a much more than impressive!

You can complete the 4.35 miles on a treadmill or outside, wherever you'd prefer and is convenient for you. There is no time limit to cover the distance, so you do not need to feel have to hit a particular pace per mile unless you'd like to. You'll receive a commemorative pin for it with the event logo that will be donated by Ashworth Awards. In addition, the great people at AfterShokz will cover the costs of shipping that to you and will give you a 15% discount on any purchase at their website, in addition to an automatic entry for a chance to win a free pair of their awesome headphones.
