After having taken some time for rest and active recovery from a race in late April, I began ramping my mileage up again over the last couple of weeks to prepare to run the 2021 Missoula Half Marathon. Race directors made the tough decision earlier this Spring to shift this race to a fully virtual event due to several factors related to the COVID19 pandemic. While I'm bummed about not actually going there this year, I completely understand and support their decision, and have already cemented the details about when and where I will be running this virtual half marathon instead.
The date will be Saturday, June 19th, and I will run it with Angela, a friend from my local club, the Champions Running Association. We plan on running a fun and mostly scenic route in Houston, which will take us along the well-established paths between Rice University, Hermann Park, the Houston Zoo, Brays Bayou, and University of Houston. Our goal is to not worry about a particular time or pace, and to enjoy and take photos of interesting spots along the way.
Reasons to run
Even with this event having gone virtual, I have still found it of great benefit to me because it has helped me stay motivated to get back on my training and pick things up right where I left them in late April after my last race. I also find significance in that the race proceeds benefit Run Wild Missoula, an awesome non-profit organization which is committed to encouraging runners and walkers of all ages and abilities in Missoula, Montana.
A bonus that has also been motivating me about this virtual event is that as a participant, I'll be receiving an innovative Runner Box that the race organizers are including as part of every runner's package this year to make it as fun and interactive as possible. This custom box will include Missoula and Montana-specific goodies in addition to the traditional swag that we typically receive. I'm intrigued by it and looking forward to opening it when I receive it!
